House and Senate lawmakers have passed legislationdecriminalizing minor marijuana possession offenses. Both the Governor and the Attorney General are on record in favor of decriminalization. Senate lawmakers also passed separate legislation on Tuesday, SB 1015 , by a unanimous vote.
As currently written, the measure decriminalizes the possession and distribution of up to two ounces of marijuana by adults — making these activities punishable by a $50 fine. The legislation now moves to the state Senate for further consideration. Annually, police make over 30,000 marijuana-related arrests in New Jersey.
