New York decriminalized marijuana on July 29 th , as explained by Reuters and The Wall Street Journal. During his campaign, Governor Andrew Cuomo pledged to legalize the drug. Unfortunately, his bill did not garner enough support, stopping that promise in its tracks. However, this did not deter Cuomo from pushing for some marijuana reform in New York.

The legislation would not federally deschedule cannabis but would instead move it from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act. It would also assign research objectives to several federal health and science agencies.

U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe (GAHR’-duh-fee) on Monday rejected a claim that the deal would infringe on the name of another company, Woodstock Roots. A two-judge bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said that legalisation of cannabis for medical purposes could only be done by the Central Government, by either bringing a new enactment or amending the present law. The court, while dismissing the petition, also imposed costs of Rs 10,000 on the petitioner, to be deposited with the Delhi High Court Bar Association Library Fund.
