Many growers are beginning to use irradiation techniques (e.g. x-ray, electron beam, gamma) that promise to eliminate microbes without compromising quality. A microbial failure can cost growers hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue, so irradiation appears to be a prudent risk mitigation strategy. However, some labs have reported that although irradiated material typically passes culture-based techniques, it still fails qPCR testing.
